The novel Eagle Blue by Michael D’Orso is quite unique when the topic of who the main character is comes into play. Unlike other novels, there is not one specific main character. The Fort Yukon Eagles’ basketball team and their coach, Dave, are the main characters in the novel. If I had to choose one person off of the team that I thought was main character, I would have to say Matt simply because he is the best player. I cannot think of any characters in literature that are similar to the main character(s) in this novel, however, I do think that Dave reminds me of Ken Carter from the movie Coach Carter, played by Samuel L. Jackson. Carter and Dave both play similar roles in trying to get their players to maintain their school work and basketball, while at the same time, reminding them to stay away from drugs and alcohol. They both serve as roll models for the players through the good times and the bad times.
Matt reminds me of a typical high school senior player who will do anything to go out with a bang. He does not want to follow in the footsteps of all the other civilians inBoth of the main characters in Eagle Blue, Dave and Matt, spend most of their time trying to become role models for the not only the team, but the town itself.
. One main show of maturity in this novel is when Matt decides to quit smoking tobacco and serve as a role model for what he believes the village should really be like. Fort Yukon
